This book changed my life!!!

I have been a christian for a long time. Never have my eyes been more opened, nor have I seen so clearly what the fear of the Lord truly means. I have longed for true intimacy with God for years. But until I read this book I always felt he was so far away, intangible and therefore I was unable to really, truly comprehend His love. Joy's book helped bring to life the true love of God and how much he desires intimacy with us all. The fear of the Lord? The age old interpretation couldn't be more wrong. All of this book blessed me, parts encouraged me and yet others convicted me. At times I felt such conviction I would look at it and not be able to pick it back up until I set right the cause of my conviction. What a powerful book! Every christian who truly seeks intimacy with God, should read and reread this book!

The Productive Role of Unknowability

In the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition, negative theology, or apophatic theology, makes negative statements of denial to a positive effect when discussing God, since God reveals His essence as unknowable.

This insightful and ecumenically productive work, reminiscent of Thomas Merton or Frithjof Schuon, is an important step in the Buddhist and Christian dialogue since it takes a common concept from each tradition and compares them in an intelligent manner, putting them in dialogue. What is more, from my Christian perspective, is that non-Christians should be exposed to the original forms of Christianity that allow for mystery, God's grace and are less dependant upon speculation and the typically "telling God what to do" mentality prevailing at the moment, or just assuming you know the will of God about salvation of non-Christians. Eastern Orthodoxy is able to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and allow for God's mercy and grace to flow wherever the Spirit will blow while at the same time not selling the farm and say all of our differences are really nothing and any God is as good as anything else. Apophaticism presents not a ceiling, beyond which we cannot go, as is often thought, but rather a floor upon which to stand and grow, a foundation that goes beyond positive and negative to encounter the mystery of divine personhood in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Concepts break down quickly, and language quicker still, but the grace of illumination penetrates all who seek and are found by God.

Williams shows each tradition in itself before exploring connections. For the Christian Tradition, Dionysios and Maximus the Confessor are used and Dogen is the Soto Zen Buddhist counterpart. She gives a great rehash of post-Chalcedonian Orthodoxy and for this reason alone the book is a worthwhile read. She then makes a comparison which at times seemed like apples and oranges, but she skillfully shows possible convergences for dialogue, which she summarizes in her final chapter. Even so, it seems that even if the picture frames are the same, the paintings themselves still are divergent, since at the end of the day theology is not something Buddhism considers appropriate to study in the strict sense. It reminds me of someone trying to compare Islam to Christianity, when it would be better to start with Eastern Orthodoxy and Sufism.

Other books of interest may include "Every Branch In Me", edited by Barry McDonald; "Form and Substance in the Religions" by Frithjof Schuon, the works about Thomas Merton that may indeed be the best place to start: "Merton and Taoism" and "Merton and Buddhism". In fact, his own writings, especially his asian journals, should be required reading for this type of study.

Introduction

Back in 2006, when I sat down to write my first 4 Ingredients cookbook, my goal was to create for all of you what I wanted for myself: a simple guide to making home-cooked meals for my family. What could be easier than recipes that require only four or fewer ingredients? I’m not one to brag (really!), but seven years and five books later, I have to say I’ve outdone myself. One Pot, One Bowl is a glorious collection of sweet and savory dishes full of fresh, easy-to-find ingredients—no more than four in each recipe—that require only one pot and one bowl. That means less cleanup and more time enjoying these fabulous meals with the friends and family you love.

In this book, full of gorgeous photographs by Stuart Quinn, you will find recipes for casseroles, roasts, soups and stews, pizza, pasta, pies, and desserts. Some of my personal favorites are the Creamy Bacon & Sun-Dried Tomato Chicken, the French Lamb Casserole, the Apple Crumble, and the Baked Rice Pudding. That said, everything in these pages makes my mouth water, and I know yours will, too!

It is my intention with this cookbook to help every home chef rediscover the wonders of quick, easy, and delicious home-cooked meals. I truly hope you find some inspiration and a bit of kitchen wisdom within.

The concept behind this book is simple: take up to four ingredients, combine into one bowl and this will lead to a tasty, convenient dish.

The recipes are split into chapters covering breakfasts & brunches, snacks & lunches, slow cookers & casseroles, pots & pans, roasts & bakes, soups & stews, pizza, pies & pasta and finally sweet treats (and straight away one of this reviewer's favourite recipes jumps straight out of the page). This book takes a new approach with its look inside the cupboard, examining typical ingredients used, by giving a relatively concise list and pointing out that you if you have all of the ingredients there you can prepare anything in the book. For some strange reason, it was felt necessary though to note that "salt, pepper and water are not included in the four ingredients." Would anyone REALLY be that picky?

Flipping through the recipes you can see that a lot of thought has been put into the selection of the recipes. Sure, many are simple - but that is the point - but not with ludicrous examples as "making toast", take bread, butter and toast the bread. Small things really make some of these recipes stand out, such as the idea of serving a pesto bread inside small flower pots (or cans) and this cannot fail to be appreciated when served at table. Other recipes are simply intriguing, such as making a lemon butter, as a great alternative spread for toast or a muffin filling. Other recipes are perhaps a more acquired taste, such as toasted Nutella sandwiches - which the author is at pains to point out are immensely popular on Facebook.

The author has missed a trick here (and this is one of our bugbears). List the typical preparation time and cooking time! In a book like this, seeing two large figures would even further underline just how simple and quick these recipes can be and that you can have good, wholesome food without cutting corners. Time-pressed households can put away the ready meals! Everything else just flows. Easy-to-follow recipes, some engaging photography and sadly far too many things that could tempt you off a strict dietary regime.

This is a great little book at a great little price. It could be a good gateway to cooking for those who feel that they don't have time or the skills to do things in a kitchen as well. There's not a lot more one can say!

Good for bringing your lunch to work. Good time and money saver for NYer.

I've only had this book for 2 weeks, but I know I've already saved a ton of money. Before I moved to NYC, I used to cook a lot, but now I'm apparently a "real" New Yorker. In short, I don't cook and I get take-out a lot, which can be expensive. I'm all about saving money, so I got this for a one-pot/lunch recipe cookbook. Well, in the short time I've had this book, I've brought my lunch to work everyday and I've had a (reheated) home-cooked meal each night - except for 2 days because I love sushi and Thai.

This is the BEST book for making meals that aren't too complicated in prep or cooking time, and/or you don't want to spend a lot of time in the grocery store running around for ingredients and realizing you forgot to buy something. There are plenty of ways to add your own spin or complexity to many of these recipes, but if you don't you'll still get a good end result.

The only downside to the recipes is sometimes it can be hard to increase or decrease the recipe by a fraction, like 1/3 more, because a lot of recipes used pre-made ingredients like a packet of powdered salad dressing/beef stroganoff flavoring. On the positive side, it's easy to make 2 recipes at a time because you cook for 4-6 servings, and it's so easy to remember what to buy. I definitely recommend this book.

Easy But Bland

I admit I was curious as to how four ingredients could create a simple main course that would be palatable. Not that I am a food snob, but I like to cook and rarely do I find simple recipes that pack enough flavor.

Kim McCosker reinvents easy main courses, but for me, they are lacking in flavor depth. Granted, the beginning of the book states that salt and pepper are not included in the four ingredients, but then again rarely are there any other seasonings listed. You will have to dress up each according to your personal likes. For instance, her version of Sloppy Joes includes ground beef, onion, bell pepper and ketchup. That is it. For me, even with salt and pepper, there is no flavor.

I would consider the recipes here as a starting point. There are some very good ideas and the pictures really give you a feel of how they should look, but it will be up to you, as an individual, as to where you want to take them.

Rhines surveys significant eras in film history and their impact on African Americans, from the silent era and the impact of The Birth of a Nation , through the emergence of the Black-owned Lincoln Motion Picture Company, and the later introduction of sound, to the postwar era, the antitrust suit against Paramount Pictures, the introduction of television, and Blaxploitation movies that won audiences back. He brings the story up to date with present-day blockbusters and the success of Spike Lee, who began as an independent and became a force in the industry, and others who hope to follow in Lee's footsteps. Rhines, who has worked behind the camera himself, reflects on independent filmmaking, the risks of both failure and success, and his hope for positive change in the African African community if more African American filmmakers can come to the forefront in the business.

In sober, almost fatigued prose, Rhines, a professor of political economy in the African American and African studies department at Rutgers's Newark campus, traces the roles that African Americans have played-or not played-in all aspects of the movies from 1895 to the present. Rhines efficiently covers an impressive breadth of subjects through considerable original research. He relates an entire troubled history of blacks in cinema from Edison's experiments, silent movies such as The Birth of a Nation and a response to it, Birth of a Race, to Depression and WWII era films, to blaxploitation movies of the '70s such as Shaft and the "gangsta" blockbusters of the '80s and early '90s such as Boyz N the Hood. But Rhines also discusses Hollywood's discriminatory employment practices, the special concerns of black female filmmakers, Spike Lee's failure as a "responsible social critic" and how film distribution "is the greatest obstacle to broad-based success for African American feature filmmakers, film crews, and film cast members." Rhines consistently treats "art" as a product in a "system of economic relations that pits one group against another in the interest of singular economic gain." Neither humanism nor aesthetic experimentation is enough to counteract this colossal problem, he says. Despite this pessimism and his implication that the "system" has a life of its own, Rhines still encourages members of the "black urban underclass" to choose moviemaking as a career. Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp is the second popular novel from American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was first published in two volumes by Phillips, Sampson and Company in 1856. Dred, the titular character, is one of the Great Dismal Swamp maroons, escaped slaves living in the Great Dismal Swamp, preaching angry and violent retribution for the evils of slavery and rescuing escapees from the dog of the slavecatchers. The response to Stowe's first work greatly impacted her second anti-slavery novel. Uncle Tom's Cabin drew criticism from abolitionists and African-American authors for the passive martyrdom of Uncle Tom and endorsement of colonization as the solution to slavery. Dred, by contrast, introduces a black revolutionary character who is presented as an heir to the American revolution rather than a problem to be expatriated. Dred can thus be placed within an African-American literary tradition as well as a political revision of the sentimental novel (see David Walker's Appeal (1829) and Frederick Douglass's The Heroic Slave (1852)). The novel is also interesting in the historical context of runaway slave communities surviving for a long time in swamp areas. Swamps were places where runaway slaves could hide, and therefore became a taboo subject, particularly in the south. The best hiding places were found on high ground in swampy areas.

This book published in 1856 has been reformatted for the KIndle and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.

The study of any nation or people is fascinating but history of The United States is truly amazing. Incredibly we still exist as a nation with state's rights and human rights. After reading this graphic book written during the worst time in our history, I am filled with a deep sadness.

This book is about algebra. This is a very old science and its gems have lost their charm for us through everyday use. We have tried in this book to refresh them for you. The main part of the book is made up of problems. The best way to deal with them is: Solve the problem by yourself - compare your solution with the solution in the book (if it exists) - go to the next problem. However, if you have difficulties solving a problem (and some of them are quite difficult), you may read the hint or start to read the solution. If there is no solution in the book for some problem, you may skip it (it is not heavily used in the sequel) and return to it later. The book is divided into sections devoted to different topics. Some of them are very short, others are rather long. Of course, you know arithmetic pretty well. However, we shall go through it once more, starting with easy things. 2 Exchange of terms in addition Let's add 3 and 5: 3+5=8. And now change the order: 5+3=8. We get the same result. Adding three apples to five apples is the same as adding five apples to three - apples do not disappear and we get eight of them in both cases. 3 Exchange of terms in multiplication Multiplication has a similar property. Beautifully written!

I bought this book for my daughter (10 years old) and we read it together. We went very slow and I supplement it with a work book. She likes it. I was impressed by the beauty of this book. It might be a little too slim for a textbook but every kid who wants to learn algebra should read it. More than teaching algebra it shows what math should be: simple and beautiful.

My daughter's math textbook is 5 pounds and I can't even stand looking at it. I understand that not every is enthusiastic about math and not everyone can feel the beauty of math. But you don't have to make math so ugly.

Learning math with a 5 lb textbook is simply terrifying but if your kid goes to public school you probably have no choice. Let you kid read a good book like this one, as early as possible, before he(she) grows a life time aversion to math.

I can't think of a title. Just buy the book!

Well, H. Wu on his page and N.F Taussig here have written quite good reviews, so I guess I can't really add anything new. Still, I feel the need to praise this book some more. Could it be used for a main text or should it be just a supplement? I don't know, but there is much more mathematics contained in these 149 pages than in any standard 500 page high school text on the market today. That's the unsurprising result of accomplished mathematicians writing a math book. Sure, some topics are missing. You won't find 3 or 4 chapters devoted to the several "different" ways to graph a line. There aren't fifty problems in a row that start with "suppose Sam rows upstream at 5 miles per hour and it takes her seven times as long as..." Unfortunately, there isn't even a treatment of complex numbers, the only omission that seems wrong.

You will find several interesting and serious topics that would be dangerous to bright students who insist they hate math, or rather what they've been told is math. Imagine their initial embarrassment when they find out that they can enjoy the subject! Maybe more importantly, imagine their relief when they realize that there IS a reason why we "FOIL", there IS a reason why negative times negative is positive, there IS a reason why we say a^(-1)=1/a, and it's not because "the teacher said so" or "that's just the rule" (ok, it is the rule, but now you'll see why). And there's no attempt to sneak anything by the reader. The authors are quick to acknowledge any gaps in their reasoning, and to assure the reader that in the future he or she will fill them.

It's this honesty and attention to rigor without being too formal or dry that give this book some extra charm. It moves smoothly from basic arithmetic (which everyone should still read if only to learn a different way of explaining it to a student/younger sibling/child) all the way to proofs, both algebraic and visual when possible, of some important inequalities. Cauchy's inductive proof, first for powers of two and then filling in the gaps, of the AM-GM inequality is here, as is the standard proof of Cauchy-Schwarz by the discriminant of a polynomial. Go to your local high school and look at its algebra book. I doubt that's in there.

I'll end with a few of the funny, sometimes weird, little remarks:

After illustrating the associative law using the example (sugar + coffee) + milk = sugar + (coffee + milk), the next problem is: "Problem 25. Try it."

"Please keep in mind that a monomial is a polynomial, so sometimes for a mathematician one is many."

"Probably you are discouraged by this solution because it seems impossible to invent it. The authors share your feeling."

One section begins: "62. How to confuse students on an exam: As usual, there are many evil ways to make use of knowledge."

Great approach, but not suitable to modern study

As a returning college undergrad studying a math-heavy field, I picked up Gelfand's Algebra hoping to rejuvenate my very rusty algebra skills. To be honest, I didn't even learn algebra that well when I first studied it over a decade ago, but I slid by as a stereotypical "math student" in grade school. I wanted to do it right this time, and I'd heard very good things about this book.

I want to start with the positives, because there are many. If you're someone put off by the modern way of teaching math that forgoes all explanations and intuition in favor of step-by-step guides and formulas, then you'll appreciate Gelfand's approach to the field of algebra. Each subject is treated in a learn-by-doing fashion, and nothing is spoon fed. Clever intuitive explanations are provided for many topics that most books just take for granted. If you work your way through the entire book and all of its problems, you'll come away with algebraic understanding and intuition that probably exceeds that of most undergraduate math majors at the college level. As I said, I wanted to learn algebra the "right way" this time around, and I definitely achieved my goal through this book.

That said, this book has some pretty major flaws to the point that I have trouble actually recommending it. In fact, I don't think I'd even recommend it to my past self.

First, of the hundreds of exercises provided throughout the book, it feels like less than half of them have solutions provided. The author tries to explain that any problem without a solution is okay to skip if you can't solve it, but that explanation just isn't good enough. The fact is that the meat of this book is its problems, and if you skipped every problem without a solution, you'd probably learn less algebra than you would from a standard textbook. Like I said, Gelfand's approach is very learn-by-doing, but he doesn't give you the proper tools to actually "do" everything you're supposed to "learn." In fact, many problems build on previous problems, so if you skip any of them you risk triggering a cascade of unsolvable exercises that will leave you frustrated and confused. It's not like these are routine calculations you're doing, either. Most of the problems require creative problem solving, significant trial and error, or out of the box thinking to solve. There's nothing inherently wrong with this (in fact I love this approach, as it builds vital mathematical intuition and "real" math skills), but without solutions there's no way to check the correctness of your answer. If you get stuck (and you WILL get stuck), there's nothing you can do. Simply put, the challenge level of some of these problems is such that the typical math student is bound to encounter several of them that they will never solve on their own, and there's no way for them to help themselves along. I've heard some people suggest that the lack of solutions is good because that way you're forced to work through the problem on your own, but as someone with the self control to give each exercise a nice long, honest attempt, I found it to be a major hindrance to my learning. After hours of searching, I managed to find a document online with solutions to the unsolved problems, and that's the only way I was able to work my way through the book.

Second, much of the wording in this book is ambiguous, and in some cases there are major errors. It's not always clear what an exercise is asking you to do, and the mistakes can really set you back and waste your time. The subject matter is difficult enough without throwing away hours of effort just because the book didn't give you clear instructions or explanations.

Third, there's just not enough reinforcement in this book. On this plus side, this means you're learning something new with each and every exercise, but the problem is that the near-zero repetition doesn't leave much room for the learning to sink in. I would have really appreciated a handful of reinforcement problems for the most essential concepts.

As a tutoring aid, this book would probably get 5 stars. In that situation, the tutor can have worked everything out ahead of time and guide the student through the many challenges in this book. But as a self-study tool, or even a classroom text, this classic tome has a few too many issues. It earns 3 stars for the high quality of Gelfand's approach and explanations, but the issues with the exercises keep it from a true recommendation. If this book were to be republished some day with corrections and a full set of solutions, I would have no problem giving it 5 stars.
